Books

Through regularly writing and presenting their work, members of Keating Chambers are actively involved in the development of construction law.  The best example of this is ‘Keating on Construction Contracts’, the long-renowned standard text.  The 8th edition (Sweet & Maxwell, 2006) is a genuine team effort by Keating Chambers.  Edited by Stephen Furst QC and former Head of Chambers Vivian Ramsey, now Mr. Justice Ramsey, it features special commentaries by Adrian Williamson QC (on the JCT forms of building contract) and Professor John Uff QC CBE (on the ICE forms of engineering contract).  No fewer than 24 other members of Chambers also contributed to the 8th edition, underlining its impressive strength in depth.

The companion publication ‘Keating on JCT Contracts’ (2006) is edited by Adrian Williamson QC and published in loose-leaf and CD Rom formats by Sweet & Maxwell, with assistance from five other members of Chambers.

Another team effort in 2006 was the 1st edition of the Engineers’ Dispute Resolution Handbook, edited by Robert Gaitskell QC and published by Thomas Telford.  Eight members of Chambers worked on this publication. The popularity of this publication led to a revised 2nd edition being released in 2011; once again edited by Robert Gaitskell QC, leading a team of nine members of Keating Chambers.  The book can be purchased through the ICE bookshop and will be available on the ICE Virtual Library.

Keating on NEC3, with a team headed by David Thomas QC will be published in December 2011.

Members of Chambers also contribute to a wide range of other publications in their own right, including major works.

In the international sphere, Simon Hughes QC co-authored (with Jeremy Glover) ‘The New FIDIC Red Book: a Clause by Clause Commentary’ published by Sweet & Maxwell (2006) with an introduction by Christopher Thomas QC.

Lucy Garrett contributed to the 1st edition of The Technology and Construction Court (Sweet & Maxwell 2006) by His Honour Judge Coulson QC (another former Member of Chambers) and Jane Lemon prepared the chapter on Professional Negligence of Architects and Engineers with him for the Lloyds of London publication ‘Professional Negligence’.

A particular feature of much of the writing of members of Keating Chambers is that it is geared to the assistance of other professions.  ‘Keating on Construction Contracts’ and ‘Keating on JCT Contracts’ are widely used by lawyers as well as other construction professionals, but other publications by Members of Chambers are more specifically focussed.  His Honour Peter Bowsher QC wrote the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Handbook on Award Writing (CIArb 2006), Samuel Townend wrote a chapter in Construction and Engineering Law – a Guide for Project Managers (Butterworths, 2003) while Vincent Moran QC was a contributor to Butterworths Architects Legal Handbook.  A particular field of activity has been co-operation with RICS Books in its Case in Point Series (of which Director of Research Professor Anthony Lavers FRICS is Consultant Editor).  These handbooks are written with the specific aim of providing well-organised access to case law on issues of concern to chartered surveyors in particular.  The series now includes Party Walls (Sarah Hannaford QC and Jessica Stephens, 2004), Building Defects (Calum Lamont and Adam Constable QC , 2006), Contract Administration (Gideon Scott Holland and Calum Lamont, 2007) and Construction Claims (Adam Constable QC  and Calum Lamont, 2007).  A companion title to Party Walls on Rights to Light (Sarah Hannaford QC, Jessica Stephens and Rachael O’Hagan) published at the end of 2008.

Journals

Keating Chambers also reaches the industry and its professions through a number of technical and legal journals.  One of the most frequent contributors is Tim Elliott QC, who has been writing a regular legal column in ‘Building’ magazine for many years.  Lucy Garrett has edited the Adjudication Society Newsletter since 2005.  There have been recent articles in Construction Law Journal by John Marrin QC, Alexander Nissen QC and Justin Mort.  Papers published by the Society of Construction Law have been authored by John Marrin QC, (2002), Robert Gaitskell QC (2004 and 2005), Professor John Uff QC, (2002 and 2003) and Jonathan Selby, (2002).

Other prominent contributors include Adam Constable QC  (International Construction Law Review 2006 and New Law Journal (2003 and 2005).

David Thomas QC is a regular contributor to the International Bar Association’s Construction Law International and co-authored an article for the New Law Journal’s Special Property Edition in 2007.
